I had a Medela Pump In Style Original that I used for about 3 months before it suddenly seemed to lose suction/power and I could no longer pump as easily as I once had. I was already pleased with all the Avent products I had - bottles, pacifiers, the microwave steam sterilizer, and the bottle warmer - the Avent breast pump seemed to get good reviews and I liked the idea of pumping straight into the feeding bottles, so I took the plunge. It *is* a lot of money, but so is any other dual electronic breast pump. I only wish now that I had bought this one first so I wouldn't have wasted money on the Medela.

I've been using this pump for two weeks now and I just hope it's lifespan is longer than the Medela because I absolutely LOVE this pump!

*** UPDATE *** It is now March 1, 2010. I've been using the Avent pump for nine months now and I still love it just as much as I did when I first got it. The connection between the hose and the pump motor housing is the only thing that has worn out - it's a little plug like a telephone jack and the little tab broke off. It still works, but I can see the potential for it to come loose during a pumping session so I plan on ordering a replacement before it actually becomes a problem. Based on others' comments, I know I have to order it straight from Philips and it can take a while. But other than that, it still works great, it's still in great condition, I haven't needed to fix or replace anything else, and I still LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!

Compared to the Medela PiS the Avent Isis Duo is:

The Medela was like a piston engine. One of the ways I new it was losing power was because it was no longer as noisy as it used to be. The Avent pump is MUCH quieter. If I wanted to, I could probably pump right in my cubicle and no one would be the wiser.

Comfortable
-----------
Again, the Medela was like a piston engine. I felt like a cow hooked up to an automatic milking machine and it certainly didn't feel like my baby nursing. All the suction was concentrated on the nipples, not the areolae and, while not necessarily painful, it wasn't comfortable. It was supposed to have the two-phase suction that simulated the early, light sucking that stimulates letdown, followed by the deep, nutritive sucking, but I can't say I ever noticed a change in the suction or the rate. Sure, you could adjust the speed and intensity of the suction, but only to five specific presets.
The Avent, however, has the cushions that "massage" the areolae and I think this really does help with letdown and subsequent flow. If you know anything about proper latch-on, you know that baby is supposed to get the areola in his mouth, not just the nipple, so the Avent is much closer to nature in that respect. Plus, the intensity and duration of the suction are completely customizable and can be reset at any time. So you can really mimic the quick, soft letdown sucking before moving on to the long, deep sucking. I've gone entire pumping sessions without really feeling the suction, which is just like nursing - it doesn't generally feel like the baby is trying to tear your nipple off, but that's what the Medela felt like!

So Medela only had the preset speed and suction options and no matter what setting you chose, the suck part of the pump was the same duration as the release. But because you can completely control the rate of the Avent pump, you can do a very long pull (the instructions even say to depress the handle that creates the vacuum and hold it there for 3 seconds). The first time I tried this, I was amazed! The milk poured forth, a steady stream for the whole 3 seconds! It was really satisfying to hear the plop of all that milk fall into the bottle over and over again. I can finish a pumping session in much less time than I ever could with Medela. Also, because you can reset the rate at any time, you can restimulate letdown or change to a longer pause between pulls as you get to the end. With the Medela, I used to be able to still hand-express milk after the pump had long since stopped producing any, but I seem to get every last drop with the Avent pump!

Other things to keep in mind:

- The Avent funnels have more parts to disassemble, clean, and reassemble than the Medela funnels. Factoring in cleaning and assembly, while the actual pumping takes less time, my pumping sessions are overall the same amount of time from start to finish as they were with the Medela PiS.

- The Avent funnels are easier to clean by hand. When I'm at work, I use sterilizing wipes between sessions and I can actually reach all the places milk touches with my fingers. I couldn't do this with the Medela funnels.

- The Avent pump isn't integrated into the bag and it's cord is longer. This makes it a little more portable.

- The Avent tubes are stiffer than the Medela tubes. Be sure to use the bottle stands or those tubes will pull them right over.

- Avent includes funnel covers and screw bases that seal up the funnels between uses to keep them sterile. BIG plus over Medela in my book.

- The trigger and button for adjusting suction and speed are right at your fingertips instead of on the pump housing. With Medela, when you were double pumping you had to start the pump with one hand and then try to position that funnel over the breast while it was sucking, and you also had to try to break suction while the pump was still going and both hands were full - not easy!

- The included Avent manual pump is FAR superior to the manual pump included with Medela PiS.

All in all, if you're considering Medela, do yourself a favor and get this Avent pump instead! Your breasts will thank you!

I tried the Avent bottles and they were really awful. First thing is that they create a terrible negative suction pulling-pressure while the baby is drinking, which is frustrating for the baby as it does not allow the food to flow freely through the nipple. It also causes the baby to suck air, causing severe gas! The negative suction pressure also creates a terrible noise, which is oh-so-annoying to listen to!!!!! Also, the nipples are made of a hard plastic and it started to create blisters on my son's lips from all of the hard sucking!!!! I switched to the Dr. Brown's bottles and they are much, much better, eliminating all of these problems! I tossed these bottles straight into the garbage! Don't waste your money!

We've been using these bottles since our son was 1 week old, and they work great. He had no problem with nipple confusion switching between this bottle and the breast. We've had no problems with leaking, and I love the fact that you can convert the bottles to sippy cups later.

One note for breastfeeding moms -- your baby may be able to use the #1 nipple for much longer than a formula-fed baby, since it more closely resembles how the milk comes from you. So wait before buying #2 & #3 nipples, because you may not need them!

My son is 7 months old and was a gas filled newborn. I used Playtex VentAire until now. Very good bottles, but when your baby is walking and pulling up on things who has time to spend on bottles. You have a bottom plastic part that has a seal that you put on then the regular top ring, nipple and cap. Lots of parts...and no time. I switched and have had no problem with leaks from the Avent bottles. I tried almost every other bottle to find one that he liked and had less parts. But as far as colic goes no clue on the Avent. A good bottle and no leaks for me.

"These are supposed to be the best bottles"!!!! This is what I was told, but no one told me they leaked. After my son was born, my husband and I bought a couple boxes of the different sizes of the avent bottles. I told him that everyone says these are the best bottles to use. After using them, my husband and I noticed they leaked. Not all the time, but often enough. This got very frustrating, especially at 2:00 in the morning when we were tired. We would put the cap on numerous times and the bottle would still leak. The leak was coming from the cap not the nipple. I also noticed how messy they are. My son always spit his formula out while drinking because I think the hole in the size 1 nipple is too big. His shirt would be soaked and formula would get on his neck after feeding him. We packed all the bottles away and we use the playtex ventaire. These bottles work so much better. They are not messy at all and they do not leak. I can even feed my son without putting a bib on him. I'm sure others like the avent bottles, but my experience with them was not so good. My advice for mothers, especially new ones, would be to get a couple different brands to experiment with. This way you can decide what works better for baby and you.

These breastshells helped me during pregnancy and post. During pregnancy they helped draw out my flat, and what I know now as small nipples. Post-pregnancy they helped relieve engorgement because they exert a small amount of pressure on the areola. This helped my baby latch on better b/c the breast wasn't soooo full. (I have a lot of milk). The shells catch milk really well, and if they are sterile you can even save the milk.

The other great thing about these breastshells is that they prevent sore nipples from rubbing on your bra. I'd put a little lansinoh on my nipples, then the breastshells, then the bra. Just felt better. Only precaution: Make sure you put them on with the holes on the top or else you will be soaked, and they really can't be worn outside your home. They are obvious and unattractive.

I love the warmer, but WHY WHY WHY don't they have a timer on it? WHY is there no on/off light so I can see if the warmer is still powered up? As it is now, the indicator light only illuminates when the water is heating. Once it's reached desired temperature the light turns off (that's the water temperature, not the milk/baby food temp) but it's still powered up. It will eventually burn off all the water if you dont notice. Is it on or off? I have to look in the back of the unit to see the on/off switch - annoying since I have to turn it around every time if I'm not sure if its in or off. So now I have it sitting sideways on the counter and not only does it look odd that way (since it is clearly not the front showing) but the cord gets in the way. The directions state to unplug the unit after use so it's not left on by accident. What a pain that is. Here I am, baby in one arm and trying to pull a plug out of a wall socket one handed??? I hope the designers read these posts...

±1±: Best Buy We have been using Avent products for both of our children without problems. They are great products. I wish they had BPA-Free products earlier. I bought this two fast flow nipples because the store near us does not have BPA-Free ones. However, when I received them from mail, I did not find anywhere on the package says BPA-Free. I thought there should be somewhere says BPA-Free. Usually the BPA-Free products has a little bit yellow color than the regular ones. But the ones I received look the same as the regular ones that are not BPA-Free. So I am not sure if the products I received are the real BPA-Free nipples. on Sale!

Before my baby girl was born 6 months ago may friend recommended Dr. Browns bottles because they would prevent may baby from getting gas/colic. I went and purchased Dr browns' bottles which worked great it was just a bit annoying having to wash all the pieces that made the bottle work. When my baby turned 4 months I decided to switch to Avent (I had seen my cousin and sister in law use them on their babys who are a few months older than my baby girl) Why did I do that? little did I know that these bottles leak like no other. I thought leaking bottles was a thing of the past, not in 2009 with so much technology. I was wrong. My husband and I spend way too much time trying to figure out how to close it correctly and after a few tries we get it but only after 10-20 minutes (the time that takes to make 6 bottles before going to work). Sometimes I get it in the first try but others take way too long and i end up using soooo much paper towel, wash clothes, bibs, or whatever else is handy to clean the mess! I'm so disgusted with these bottles, which I think for the money I paid for all ($60.00) should be much better. I wouldn't even give them away that's how bad they are, I'm thinking about just throwing them in the garbage. My husband wants me go back to Dr. Browns and I'm all for it now I don't care about the money anymore and even if I have to wash extra pieces at least feeding time won't be a hassle. My family's sanity is priceless. Don't buy these bottles!!!!! or at least don't buy all in one shot try one first perhaps your luck is better than mine.

We have not had a problem with leaking unless we, the users, don't screw the lids on tight. Our daughter had no problem with the nipples, and we love that they are not latex. The only things we didn't do by the book, is that our daughter advanced to the next level of nipple about a month before each recommended age. But that will be individual to each child. We also love that we can turn these into baby food jars later on.

We have now used this set on our second child and we still love them. This is the same set our first child used and we have not had to replace any bottles, nipples, or pacifiers. Nothing has broken despite child #1 sometimes launching a bottle across the kitchen. And this silicone nipples and pacifiers show no signs of wear or breakdown. As with child #1, child #2 advanced to the #3-nipple a whole lot sooner than Avent's suggested age, but again every child is different. Just watch your child for cues that she's getting the milk/formula at the speed that's right for them.

I have been using these bottles since my daughter was two weeks old for my expressed milk. She took to them immediately without any issues and went right back on the breast. She is now four and a half months old and she still both breastfeeds and drinks my expressed milk in these bottles . She has never had an issue with colic, acid reflux, gas and never spits up. My wife loves it!!!!This pump takes the labor out of the manual pump. If you follow the instructions step by step and ensure you get a good seal ,it will work like a charm. Also, you can interchange the components and use it as a manual pump. I wish I would of bought this product first before I bought the manual one. I could of saved money. I used these with my daughter and *HATED* them, that was almost 5 years ago. No matter what I tried I couldn't get them to stop leaking. Now that I have my son who's almost 5 mos, and Avent products are now made by Philips they have come a long way. I've noticed they no longer leak at the slightest over tightening like they previously did. It's also very easy to avoid the over tightening too.

After the bottles come out of the dishwasher I put the water in them so they're practically ready to go. Run the nipples under water then attach to the bottle watching the ring/nipple. The nipple will stop and grip the edge of the bottle, once this happens the nipple is on and won't leak. Once you get around to using the bottles when you will notice that when you go to tighten the nipple/ring again it will stop at that point and there are no leaks. Even my husband can get these bottles right on the first shot and he overtightens EVERYTHING!

If you're pregnant or are considering these buy one and practice assembling it. We switched to these from the Ventaire because 1) my son didn't like the textured ring on the nipple, and 2) there were to many parts to get together in a hurry.
